Aspiring Business Developer – Healthcare

As a result we want to find, hire and cultivate some commercially savvy, multi-skilled people with a technology or engineering background, some experience in consulting but who are too curious, energetic and entrepreneurial to be contented within the confines of a vanilla job.

The vision is to complement our commercial team with such people, partner them with one or two members of our senior team to scale their impact and to enable us grow our business and grow them into commercial leaders. This is the ideal role for somebody with a technical background who is looking to develop their commercial and business skills and experience and ultimately to operate as a Business Developer within a high value professional services company.

The role includes a range of tasks centred around understanding market trends, identifying opportunities with clients, driving and closing sales, managing accounts and ensuring that our clients are successful.

We’re interested in talking to candidates with a background in innovation and technology who are looking to develop a career in business development and account management in one or more of these sectors: healthcare, life sciences or medical devices. You might have already started to move your career in this direction and be looking for more opportunity to learn within a strong commercial team environment or you might currently be in a scientific or technical role and looking to make a change. Either way this role will provide mentoring, skills development and hands on practical opportunities to quickly develop your career.

 

About the role

As a member of the commercial team you will take a leading role in our global activities, and be responsible for significant new business development, marketing strategy, client relationship development, account management and contract negotiation working with colleagues.

  • Wireless charging for neuromodulation implants; An external, lead-less charging system for a top-tier pharmaceutical client’s acorn-sized deep tissue neuromodulation implant
  • Breakthrough intuitive MS drug delivery device for Novartis; the ExtaviPro 30G auto-injector is very simple and intuitive to use, and enables one-handed injection
  • Groundbreaking connected insulin device for KiCoPen; an engaging connected delivery device without a battery, designed to seamlessly integrate into the user’s life
  • Breakthrough innovation for smaller, more capable surgical robotics
  • Next generation inhaler for Chiesi

Working alongside world class project managers and technical leads, you will shape potential client projects and remain close to the delivery so you can help identify follow on opportunities and account growth.

You will use your technical literacy and market understanding skills to help communicate what Cambridge Consultants can deliver to potential clients and bring together the right team to address their challenges.

During your first year you will undertake our in-house Commercial Impact Development programme. This is an integrated learning programme we have developed over the last four years comprising twenty-six different modules covering skills such as communication, negotiating, contract law, successful networking, marketing and pitching. The modules have a combination of taught and practical elements and will see you pitting your wits against fellow programme members to close a negotiation, deliver a start-up pitch, network at an event and experience all the element of sales training needed to enable you to succeed. You will have many opportunities to shadow senior colleagues and to work on real opportunities with colleagues.

Whilst this position is based in Cambridge, UK, there will be international travel.

 

Requirements

The core thing we are looking for is someone who will bring the right attitude, level of energy and intellect to our organisation. It’s also important to be curious, to ask question, a thirst for knowledge and be coachable. It’s beneficial if you have a combination of: 

  • A strong technical background (educated including to degree level or higher), together with some experience in R&D, design, manufacturing or digital services
  • Enthusiasm and energy to develop your career to become a commercial leader
  • An aspiration to take this experience and apply it to a wider range of companies in the aforementioned industry sectors, creating novel products and services with the support of an outstanding global technical team
  • A background in one/more of our target sectors is an advantage but we expect this role to be flexible across the current and future needs of the business giving you a wide exposure to market sectors and technologies
