DropTag® is simple. It is a low-cost condition-monitoring system that combines consumer electronics, new Bluetooth wireless communication standards and back-end secure data servers and portals
DropTag – the story so far
Cambridge Consultants has been developing products for other people for the past 50 years – a history that has allowed us to develop world-class skills in areas such as wireless communications, high-volume consumer products and back-end system design. The DropTag development platform embodies all this expertise.
As of today, the core IP is fully developed and we are well on the way to patent protecting the key elements of the enabling technology and service approach. So what does this mean to you? Well, in short, you have the opportunity to benefit from this world-class expertise for just a fraction of the normal development cost – whilst at the same time offering valuable benefits to your supply chain and your customers.
So how does it work?
Core to the system is the DropTag sensor 'puck' platform. It consists of acceleration and temperature sensors commonly found in modern smartphones, and couples these to a Bluetooth Smart chipset. The DropTag puck only needs a wristwatch-style battery to work, and in standard specification can perform condition monitoring for about a month. User interaction is via a simple app, which includes time and severity alerts of critical impacts, vibrations and temperatures.
We first demonstrated the technology publicly in February 2013, and since then we've been working on further maturing not only the puck but also the back-end systems. We were approached by a large range of companies, from a myriad of sectors, and we're now commencing initial trials with them.
We have already manufactured the first batch of 150 DropTag LOGGER pucks here in the UK in our in-house electronic production facility. These are special data-logger versions that will initiate our data-collection trials with clients. Once we have completed these trials, we will be able to better serve their specific needs by creating bespoke power-management algorithms optimised for their preferred event characteristics and use cases.
About Cambridge Consultants
Cambridge Consultants is a world-class supplier of innovative product development engineering and technology consulting. We work with companies globally to help them manage the business impact of the changing technology landscape.
Working from our laboratories in Cambridge, UK, and Boston, USA, we have all the in-house skills needed to help you create an innovative concept and take your product right the way through to manufacturing. Most of our projects deliver prototype hardware or software and trials production batches. Equally, our technology consultants can help you to maximise your product portfolio and technology roadmap.
We’re not content just to create me-too products that make incremental change; we specialise in helping companies achieve the seemingly impossible. We work with some of the world’s largest blue-chip companies as well as with some of the smallest, innovative start-ups who want to change the status quo fast.
With a complete range of engineering disciplines under one roof, including one of the largest independent radio design teams in the world, we’re experts in a bewildering array of technologies but agnostic to all of them; what we care about most is creating the right solutions to give our clients a truly world-class product. We thrive on real-world problems ranging from resilient digital control-of-power electronics through to innovative future-proofed smart meters – and from complex digital signal processing on innovative optical sensors made in low volume, through to large-scale, high-volume, ultra-low-cost radio telescope parts.
Cambridge Consultants is part of the Altran Group, Europe’s largest technology consultancy with a global workforce of more than 21,000 personnel.
